Describing the spelling bee competition organised by the Reading and Spelling section of our school on Monday, the 3rd of June, 2019. With themed ‘challenge me’ was simply a “successful education strategy” and “catalyst to improve spelling standards, build vocabulary, boost confidence among students, ” Our kids amazed everyone with their fabulous way they have improved in their spellings. The competition took place in the school main Hall and the atmosphere was ‘buzzing’!
The school hall housed almost all pupils from senior primary and secondary section as they all challenge each other in the contest , the panel of judges included head of English department and reading and spelling specialist Mrs Babs and Mrs Efe respectively, Mr Ikechukwu, head teacher of the secondary section also was a member of the panel. The challenge started immediately the anchor, Miss Mosunmola intimated the student of the rules to be observed In the competition to avoid being disqualified among which is no whispering of answers and keeping up to time allocated for each student to spell a particular word. The anchor, grouped the students into four ( A- H) with 2 students each in a group bringing it up to 16 contestants,each of the section saw a primary student taking up secondary student.
Pupils participated with great enthusiasm and they dueled through the toughest words.The hall was packed with pupils and teachers cheering on the competitors. All of the participants worked incredibly hard to prepare themselves for this spelling challenge and every competitor should be proud of this achievement. 16 pupils battled it through the the finals out of 16 to become Spelling Bee Champion for their group, correctly spelling words such as ‘inconceivable , intelligent, education, evaporate, technology, information’ etc. After a number of nail biting rounds, we finally had our Spelling Bee winners and an overall victory from secondary student Group H, Leroey won with 200 Points!
This competition was a wonderful learning source not only for the participants but also for their peers.This competition also helped in enriching the vocabulary bank of the student. The principal Facilitating Officer of the school, Mrs Emefoh noted that Spelling Bee Competition was designed “to improve English Language learning in the school, paying particular attention to spellings,” adding that “the competition is aimed at encouraging academic excellence in our school generally. We are convinced that this competition will raise the bar of educational standards in our school.”
Recently research has shown that there is direct correlation between spelling ability and reading ability, as such, spelling accuracy impacts positively on reading accuracy which go hand in hand with writing skills and by extension will improve the academic performance of our students. The competition made students aware of spellings and the usage of many unfamiliar words. It was a wonderful learning experience not only for the participants but also for their peers and served to enrich the vocabulary bank of the students
Spelling bee are great way for children to get exposure to pressure and and competition. It is essential to that their emotions are cared for throughout. It can be distressing and overwhelming for student to take part in spelling bee. Therefore it is a big responsibility of teachers and parents of a student taking part to ensure they mentally and emotionally prepared, spelling bee are excellent way for student to improve their abilities and their confidence among other peers, not just classmates, at any school age, spelling bee can be great strategy for individual student as to improve their abilities.
