The Era of Information Overload
Who is developing a phobia or an anxiety by the extreme and staggering amount of information we have to deal with on a per second basis? Success no longer lies on having access to information. Its all viral! The successful ones are those that will grow the skill of discipline in filtering information, while aggressively managing their time. This is a skill every educator must posses and teach their young learners!
The 21st century challenge isn't access to information, it is rather a cleptomanic overdose of information. Relevant information is like gold hidden in red sand. We are constantly flooded and bamboozled with all manner of junks, half truths, fake news and self promoting contents which flood our mail box, bleed our phone memory and make us strangers to the content we see on our social media timeline.
Today many platforms rely on digital algorithms to show us content. We have so many social media friends that we don't know personally. We also like so many pages that are attractive but irrelevant to our personal cause or interest. At the end of the day these algorithms choose which 'friends' we see their stories and What 'pages' we visit. Often without our permission, our search history and comments are manipulated to flood our timelines with sponsored content that overwhelms us, while personal updates of our friends are no where to be found.
Many students can't study, workers can't focus, kids can't write. Everyone is extremely distracted and overwhelmed. We are so addicted and spend hours on the little devices in our palms and the eutopic world they create in our heads. Deadlines are harder to reach because we have the arduous task of filtering so much information.
The attention deficit disorder (ADD) diagnosis has reached all time high because we spend more time daydreaming and seeking gratification from this Tsunami. 90% of content is now recycled, with suffocating endless and needed repetitions.
The impact is that if left unchecked, we loose alot of our personal relationships, originality, growth and active participation.
Don't get me wrong, access to information is a gaint plus! But filtering it is another story entirely!
